SciTech students thrive in mentoring program

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change we seek.” -Barack Obama

At ReNEW SciTech Academy, administrators, faculty, and staff are all about transforming our students into successful, productive students and future leaders of our world. Our “Men in Charge” and “Women in Power” are middle school, gender-specific mentoring teams that serve groups of about 10 students per adult. The goal of the mentoring groups is to take a holistic approach to learning, in order to expose our students to educational opportunities, cultural activities, hobbies and crafts, and other life-altering experiences that support their teenage years so that they can transition successfully into adulthood.

Our “Men in Charge” took all of our “Young Men in Training” to Audubon Park. At the park, each male staff member shared their trials and tribulations as they navigated through some of the toughest times of their lives yet still rose to the occasion. Our “Women in Power” were all about “Girl Power” during our outing at City Park. The ladies of SciTech shared their stories, struggles, and successes. Both trips provided opportunities for growth and relationship building between staff and students.

Throughout this year, we will continue with Mentoring Fridays where our staff and students will participate in conversations about masculinity, femininity, goal-setting, finding greatness within, ways to support each other in the wake of violence in our city, and loads of fun and recreation.

SciTech Academy is on the move; making a difference in the lives of all its students.
