Historic PK-8 campus to adopt traditional name, Laurel Elementary, for 2022-2023 school year

New Orleans, LA -- ReNEW SciTech Academy, located in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans, is undergoing a name change that will be familiar to many in the community.

Following the current academic year, SciTech will fully-adopt its traditional name, Laurel Elementary. School officials are also bringing back Laurel’s mascot, Eagles, as well as its original colors, burgundy and gray. The change marks an exciting new chapter for the school, as officials look to build on SciTech’s momentum.

“We’re so proud of the strides our staff and students have made at SciTech,” said ReNEW Chief Executive Officer Tanya Bryant. “The progress is clear, and our team is excited to continue working toward our goals for student achievement under a school name that carries so much meaning and tradition for families across the city.”

SciTech moved into the top half of open-enrollment schools in New Orleans, based on 2020-2021 simulated SPS.

“At ReNEW Laurel Elementary, we will continue adding to the strong foundation set by our staff and students at SciTech,” said Middle School Principal Glenda Poole, who also began her teaching career at the school when it was previously named Laurel.

ReNEW is planning a community event at the Laurel campus this spring to celebrate this exciting new chapter.
